    Do you want exposure to the most innovative companies in the GTA? Are you ready to help them fund their innovation and growth?


    We have an immediate opening in our software and technology team that specializes in Grants and Incentive consulting. In this role you will be working closely with technical and financial leaders at technology companies within the GTA, ranging from technology startups to large global companies. The role can be based out of our any of our GTA offices, including downtown Toronto, Markham, Mississauga or Burlington.


    At BDO we focus on helping emerging private companies scale. In this role you will help identify potential for hiring and academic collaborations. You will assess competitive advantages in emerging products in order to assist with their commercialization. Through meetings with software development teams and you will identify parts of R&D projects that are experimental in nature to add significant value by qualifying these projects for the SR&ED tax incentive.


    Applicants should have the technical knowledge and industry experience to discuss IP, R&D projects, and a commitment to keep learning about emerging technologies.


    The ideal candidate is someone with some computer science training or software development experience, writing skills, and an inquisitive nature. Extensive training on specific tax credits and incentive programs is provided but previous experience in SR&ED, Government Incentives, and the Patent process is desirable.

    Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities

    • Meet with clients’ owners and technical leaders to identify and segregate routine development from experimental work
    • Assess technical eligibility, structure projects, and prepare technical summaries
    • Collaborate with accounting staff, identify resources involved in those projects
    • Assess documentation, refine these processes, and participate in any CRA review meetings to support claims
    • Identify key differentiation in emerging products to facilitate their commercialization
    • Assist in preparing large scale project budgets
    • Assist in the provisional patent process

    Education and Professional Skills/Knowledge

    • Previous SRED / Government Incentives experience is preferred
    • Background in computer science or software engineering
    • Entrepreneurial experience is an asset
    • Ability to write concise technical reports
    • Knowledge of software development systems and processes
    • Comfortable dealing with client personnel at all levels
    • Positive approach, multi-tasking abilities and very deadline sensitive
    • Willingness to learn
    • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
    • Familiarity with the Canadian SR&ED program and other government assistance programs
    • Familiarity with cash flow, accounting, and operations management
    • Advanced skills in MS Office environment (Word/Excel/PowerPoint/Outlook)
