    Summary

    BDO Canada LLP is currently seeking to fill a position of Senior Accountant, Expatriate Tax for our Montreal Expatriate Tax group. This position will appeal to those who are looking to work in a challenging and interesting work environment; this is a full time, permanent position.

     

    The Senior Accountant, Expatriate Tax is responsible for the preparation of complex tax returns, review of simple tax returns, as well as tax equalizations and compensation reviews and planning. Supporting staff, organizing work assignments and being familiar with processes such as billing or tax filing. In this role, the Senior Accountant will also be accountable for gathering required client information necessary to prepare tax filings, participating in tax planning and recognizing potential risks. Communications with assignees and company administrators, and tax research is also expected.

     

    Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities

    • Identify and analyze research needs to compose a detailed report of the research finding
    • Ensures clients comply with applicable authorities while identifying options for minimizing the client’s tax and reporting burdens
    • Obtains required client information to utilize in the preparation of tax filings
    • Conducts detailed review on basic returns and prepares review notes and identifying potential tax issues on more complex tax returns
    • Identifies potential risk for contingent tax liabilities
    • Develops, recommends and implements standard tax methods to provide clients with maximum tax benefits related to current and future tax obligations
    • Documents all significant tax positions, as well as issues, findings and deliverables in accordance with firm policies
    • Assists in the development of client consulting project plans for assigned clients and provides support in the completion of those consulting projects
    • Represents clients before any tax authority on contested issues, as appropriate, and with assistance and guidance from the Manager or Senior Manager
    • Applies  expatriate tax compliance, planning and global implications to technical and practical issues for assigned clients
    • Identifies and applies income tax treaties and totalization agreements
    • Provides  basic advice on payroll reporting for expatriate compensation
    • Administers pre-assignment and post-arrival consultations with assignees through data gathering interviews
    • Identifies and implements tax planning opportunities
    • Understands and adheres to BDO Tax requirements
    • Other duties as assigned

    *This role will require the ability to work extra hours from time-to-time, per business requirements

     

    Education and Professional Skills /Knowledge

    • Bachelor degree in Accounting, Business Administration, International Business or other related field –required
    • Professional designation or near completion- required (Canadian CPA, US CPA or Enrolled Agent)
    • 3-5 years of experience in individual income tax and expatriate tax services
    • Bilingualism (French and English)
    • Possess excellent customer service skills
    • Ability to maintain the highly confidential nature of information
    • Capable of working and communicating effectively with professionals at all levels
    • Able to work in a deadline-driven environment and handle multiple tasks with a high attention to detail
    • Ability to work independently or within a group environment
    • Strong analytical skills and the ability to apply analysis in determining appropriate next steps
    • Excellent computer skills and the aptitude to learn new software applications
    • Knowledge regarding appropriate information required in the tax return filing process
    • Knowledge and familiarity with commonly utilized individual income tax forms
    • Prior experience in a customer / client service environment -preferred
    • Prior study abroad or international work experience -preferred
    • Prior experience working with various tax applications and research tools such as GoSystems and Tax Prep- preferred
    • Capacity to build and maintain strong relationships with client personnel
